Norm's Story- Staying Active through Cycling
It was 8 years ago, semi-retired, I was looking for a low impact way of retaining some level of fitness when I joined the Whittlesea U3A cycling group. Initially with a bicycle from my youth, I quickly found the enjoyment, friendship and relaxed pastime was a great activity – and soon, ‘upgraded’ my wheels.
With weekly rides co-ordinated by Group Leader Allan Fowler, starting from one of a few alternate locations, with a range of distances from 25km to the occasional longer distance of around 40km, typically on dedicated cycle paths and via scenic routes. Routes may change or be cancelled due to weather.
Always with a cafe stop for a convivial catch-up chat part way through the ride, I find this social aspect an important part of retirement.
I am certainly not a MAMIL (Middle Age Man In Lycra) as I wear what is comfortable – so relaxing with no pressure and just what the doctor suggest, ‘If old age is catching up, just roll a little faster.’
